(DEC. 20, 2024) — A new leader has taken the reins of the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. Director Renae Goggans was appointed in November.
“I appreciate Chief (Dana) Martin for entrusting me with the leadership of the Animal Shelter and its staff,” Goggans said. “We have some amazing employees who love animals, and we work every day to make sure the animals that come through our doors get the best care and find the best homes.”
Goggans has been in law enforcement for 12 years, eight of which she served as a mandated officer. She joined the Cherokee Marshal’s Office in 2017, and for the last three years, she has overseen the Animal Control Division of the Marshal’s Office.
“Renae is a proven leader and exceptional team builder, demonstrating unwavering dedication and compassion throughout her years in public service,” said Martin, who oversees both the Marshal’s Office and Animal Shelter as Chief Marshal and the Public Services Agency Director. “She has consistently shown a commitment to making a lasting positive impact on the welfare of both the animals and citizens in our county. I am confident she will continue to make significant positive contributions as the director of our Animal Shelter.”
In 2023, the Marshal’s Office developed a new program with K-9 Reggie, a standard poodle trained in behavior and emotional support. Goggans is K-9 Reggie’s handler, and both will continue with educational programs.
In 2024, Goggans and K-9 Reggie conducted over 50 educational programs for youth ranging from pre-school to high school. They partner with Safe Kids Cherokee County and Cherokee Recreation and Parks to help educate youth about how to properly approach dogs and how to care for them.
