(DEC. 10, 2024) — Education and enforcement of violations to Cherokee County’s Code of Ordinances are two of the priority responsibilities of the Marshal’s Office. Deputy marshals recently conducted an operation to ensure businesses are not selling alcohol to those under the age of 21.
In Georgia, a person must be at least 21 years old to purchase alcoholic beverages. The county code mirrors state law requirements.
“With college students coming home for the holidays, we typically see an increase of those the age under 21 attempting to purchase alcoholic beverages, and it’s important that employees of businesses that sell alcohol are properly asking for identification to verify age,” said Chief Deputy Marshal Dwayne Casteel.
On Dec. 4, deputy marshals along with volunteers under the age of 21 visited 69 establishments in unincorporated Cherokee County. Of the 69, two establishments failed to check ID and sold alcohol to a person younger than 21.
“This was a positive operation, resulting in less than 3 percent of the establishments failing to check ID and selling to the individual younger than 21,” Casteel said. “We appreciate the majority of the businesses prioritizing safety and the law and ensuring they are properly checking IDs.”
The two business that sold alcohol and were found in violation of county code were Citgo at 6223 Bells Ferry Road, Acworth, and Circle K at 8023 Cumming Hwy., Canton.
The employees who handled the transaction were issued citations for violation of county ordinance 6-23(B).
