Set Yourself Up for Success in 2024

A new year has officially begun! When January rolls around each year, it is the ideal time to reflect and refocus on what you want to accomplish in the next 365 days. If you find success with setting resolutions, then be our guest! But, if resolutions feel overwhelming and never end up attainable, then join us in completing small tasks to set yourself up for success in 2024.

Refocus On Your Goals

We all have goals – some are long-term, some are short. We have goals for ourselves personally and professionally – in our families and in our careers. It can be hard to juggle it all and keep those plans top of mind throughout the entire year.

So, as we start January, sit down with a notebook, a journal, a blank computer page, or even a scrap of paper and think about what you would like to achieve.

  • Do you want to work on your personal or professional development?
  • Are you hoping to grow your internal team?
  • Do you want to make more sales? Expand your product offerings? Grow into a new market?

Think back on what you had planned to achieve in 2023. Did those goals pan out? If not, why? And if so, what steps did you take toward achieving them? You can choose to revisit those past goals and try again toward the ones that did not come to fruition or try to approach the idea from a different angle.

Once you have written out a list of your 2024 goals, sit with them and evaluate if they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based). This system helps to put the objectives we set into actionable steps.

Choose to move forward with a reasonable number of goals for the year. Maybe you only have one major goal in mind, but it’s one that will require many steps. Maybe, you have the bandwidth to plan for 4-5 goals.

Your year is what you make it and working on your goals is a great way to start.

Pave A Path Forward

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” – Yogi Berra

The benefit of planning at the beginning of a new calendar year is that you have a clear 12-month timeline in which you can lay out your steps to success. You can visualize it in a calendar format and set markers to review your plan over that set time. But how can you know where to start?

Start by thinking about (and writing down) which specific steps will be needed to meet your goal. If it is new software to manage sales, who will research and implement that tool? How will that fit into the budget? Are more team members needed? Are there skills that you or your team will need to accomplish this goal? This is all part of creating a SMART goal and putting it into action.

Work with your team to brainstorm a path toward your individual and collective goals.

Commit To Connecting

Connecting with other people is at the heart of building a community and at the heart of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. Building relationships with fellow business owners and community leaders will help you build a stronger business, while also strengthening your involvement in the community.

In 2024, commit to connecting. Meet new people, get to know what they do, understand how they lead their teams, and learn how your organizations might partner together. The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce welcomes all size businesses and organizations to engage with each other and make strong connections.

They say your business is only as strong as its network! “Networking is not about just connecting people. It is about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.” – Michelle Jennae

Stand Out on Social Media

Make 2024 your year for content! Marketing has never been more accessible than it is in the digital age and with social media, you have an outlet to share about your business or organization with just a quick snap.

The start of a new year is a wonderful opportunity to push yourself to learn more about marketing or add someone to your team who can elevate your marketing efforts. If you are already posting and sharing about your organization online, upgrade your planning with a content calendar. It will allow you to plan for upcoming holidays, events, and seasons that might tie into your business.

If you are comfortable being in front of the camera, let your clients and other businesses see YOU! Whether you are in the office planning for a big meeting or getting out into the community and networking, your presence on social media can help your audience feel connected to your brand and to you.

Reflect and Reset

A successful new year is often marked by reflecting on the past year and learning from it. We learn by doing and improve by reflecting.

As you think about what all you hope to accomplish in the new year: reflect on your business wins in 2023, consider things you wish you had done but didn’t get to, and think about any valuable lessons you learned that you will be taking with you into 2024.

This can be a helpful exercise for the whole team. Have everyone think about what skills they developed in 2023, what they achieved, and how they grew personally and professionally. Can these achievements be tied to your company’s mission or values? Tying individual and team successes to the organizational mission can be a great way to drive your 2024 goals.

Without reflecting on the positive outcomes of the past year, in addition to how we have overcome trials, we cannot truly appreciate our individual and team growth – which is what drives our organizations year after year!
