A neighborhood lemonade stand is emblematic of youth, summertime, and entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day is a free national, lesson-based program that brings entrepreneurial skills to children across the country.

“Lemonade Day is a simple concept that teaches kids how to start and run their own business and truly become an entrepreneur. Lemonade stands are a staple of so many kids’ lives, but the Lemonade Day program wraps really important business education around the lemonade stand concept for a truly rich experiential learning moment for kids,” states the Lemonade Day Organization’s 2020 Impact Report.

“Lemonade Day was founded on an important American principal that entrepreneurs take risks, believing they can realize their dream if they work hard, take responsibility, and act as good stewards of their resources. [It] inspires kids to work hard and make a profit, they are also taught to spend some, save some and share some by giving back to their community,” says the organization.

The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce decided to bring the Lemonade Day program to our community in 2022 with the desire to impact students in 3rd-5th grades and spark an entrepreneurial spirit within them. The Lemonade Day program has structure that allows students to improve their problem-solving skills, their communication, boost their self-esteem, learn about financial goals and handling money, and see a physical correlation between math and the real world. It empowers our youth to feel that they have a stake in their future as independent and determined leaders.

In fact, the National Lemonade Day survey results showed the positive impact their participation had on their self-esteem and confidence.

  • 67% said “I plan to start my own business.”
  • 57% said “I will invent something that will change the world.”
  • 69% said “I can find lots of ways around a problem.”
  • 28% said “I am running my own business today.”

Cherokee County’s 2023 Lemonade Day involved 80 student participants who took the lessons from this program with many implementing them into creative and successful lemonade stands across the county. Students competed against each other for the Best Lemonade Stand along with Best Tasting Lemonade. Local business and community leaders served as judges, visiting the various stands throughout the county to evaluate the stands and taste the many varieties of lemonade. First, second, and third place awards were presented in both categories.

The Cherokee County School District is instrumental in making the Lemonade Day program a success. Again in 2024, the Chamber will provide a series of in-person lessons to 3rd-5th grade students who sign up to participate while in the After School Program at Woodstock Elementary School, Sixes Elementary School, and Hickory Flat Elementary School. The Lemonade Day curriculum will teach them the process of starting a business and how to prepare their lemonade stand for the big day.

Even if your child does not attend one of the three partner schools, they are still welcome to participate in this program! All lesson plans are found online through the MyLemonadeDay app, which features informational and fun video lessons for the students.

As students complete the lessons, there are interactive activities within the app that mimic those in the physical workbook! They will learn the spend, save, share method, as well as tips to set up their lemonade stand.
