As children, we can all remember being asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” These answers range from wanting to be teachers and firefighters to movie stars or astronauts! As children our imaginations run wild with all the possibilities of what dreams we’ll grow up to achieve and it’s important to the next generation that they’re able to learn about all types of careers – not just the ones they see in movies.
Career fairs give students an up-close look at different career paths through interactive presentations by community leaders. The 8th Grade Career Fairs, hosted by the Chamber, bring business professionals into the classroom to help inspire and teach students about careers that may align with their interests and skills. Eighth grade is the perfect age for students to participate in career fairs as they start thinking toward high school and the types of jobs they may want to pursue in the future.
Reading about a career in a textbook is much different from learning about a career straight from someone in the field. Seeing a nurse visit their classroom and talk about helping people who are hurting might ignite a spark inside a student’s heart. A banker, engineer, or someone working in public service can explain their career in a fun, relatable way that might open a student’s eyes to more than they thought possible. Career fairs expand students’ knowledge of the many industries and career choices available.
Career fairs are also an opportunity to encourage higher education for students, while also showcasing career paths that don’t require a four-year degree. Students can learn through speakers about the education and training that will be necessary to pursue the various occupations they’re interested in. Though they will have a few years to apply to schools or weigh their options, participating in an 8th grade career fair might ignite a spark for them. It’s also important that students feel empowered that there are many routes toward a “dream job” and that they can achieve their goals through hard work.
Ultimately, career fairs inspire and motivate. By engaging with business professionals, students get a look into what their role models do day-to-day, helping them to visualize themselves in that position. The students might also have valuable insights into what they don’t want to do when they grow up – helping them solidify their interests.
