(MAY 7, 2025) — Winners of the Second Annual Cherokee County High School Art Competition were honored Tuesday during the Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting.

The first-place winner is Alyssa Leach, of Creekview High School, for her piece, “Memory Lane.” There was a tie for second place between Jagger Dorgan, of Etowah High School, for his work, “Volcanos Echo,” and Sydney Waagen, of Creekview High School, for “Majesty in Charge.” Creekview High School student Stephanie Turon earned third place for “Courthouse.”

The winner of the Cherokee Choice Award went to Sequoyah High School student Caitlin Cheney for her artwork “Burst of Emotion.”

Cherokee County School District high schoolers had the opportunity to submit their artwork for the competition. This year’s theme was “The Beauty of the Earth in Cherokee.” Students were able to use their selected medium and style. Twenty-four entries were submitted, and artwork was displayed at local libraries for the art tour where members of the public could select their favorite for The Cherokee Choice Award. The top three works of art were selected by a panel of judges, which included Sheriff Frank Reynolds, Katie Caldwell, who serves as the president of the Woodstock Arts Board of Directors, and Harmony Reid, who serves as the Visual Arts Education and Outreach Manager for Woodstock Arts.

The Cherokee County High School Art Competition is a partnership with Cherokee County, the Cherokee County School District, the Sequoyah Regional Library System, the Rotary Club of Towne Lake, Friends of the Library, and Blick Art Materials to promote and foster the arts among young artists.
